It’s Nearly NaNoWriMo!

It’s Nearly NaNoWriMo!

It’s nearly National Novel Writing Month and it’s already eaten my soul, even though 1st November has not yet reached us. Currently, my bed contains 4 notebooks, 1 sketchbook (unrelated), 1 book on Irish Mythology, 1 book on Ancient Ireland, 1 book on The Celts … and a whole pile of clothes, but let’s pass over that. (This stuff was on my desk until I started using it … you know what it’s like). Somewhere in the house there is another book, about The Pagan Celts.

And why is this?

Because I’m trying to write a novel set in 4th century Ireland, that’s why, and since I wasn’t actually alive back then I have to do some research. I have an interesting tab on my Google Chrome browser — a folder of links entitled “Niall of the Nine Hostages and associated” … it was going to say ‘and associated research’ but it wouldn’t fit. Inside, there are several links.

The first is a Wikipedia article on said king. The second isn’t even any more upmarket, unfortunately — I’ve gone for ‘answers.com’ which has given me another article. Then I was looking up his background, so I’ve got a couple of articles regarding members of his family etc which you can read if you click this link here .

After that I ended up on a site called Your Irish, with this article before heading back to Wikipedia to discuss the poet by whom he was adopted. And finally, I have several articles (I think three) which all came from the same website. This one’s much more academic (well, sort of), and you might want to check out some of these translations of old texts.

On the other hand, if you really couldn’t care less, just admire my skill with the links in this article, would you? Then go and sign up for National Novel Writing Month (you have no excuse, I’ve even linked the page for you) and join the madness … and of course, read my novel when it’s finished.

Yes, this is blatantly an excuse to test out the link-making capabilities of WordPress, completely humiliate myself if this novel fails completely to keep with the historical info, and rope a few more unsuspecting newbies into taking part in NaNoWriMo. Heigh ho, all’s fair in love and novelling :)

  1. I have raided! Oh, and read as well. I must say it all sounds like it will make for a very interesting NaNo, and I wish you luck.

…Also, that list of old translated texts? It will EAT ME if I give it half a chance, I just know it, so I am going to steal that link off of you and put it in a file marked ‘after NaNo reading’, else I shall get no writing of my own done. Thank you :)

What do you think? I'd love to hear your thoughts.
