A New Favourite Song

A New Favourite Song

Thanks to my sister trying desperately to introduce me to new music, I have a new favourite song. And so here it is … and I reckon it kind of sums up my last post as well.

Frank Turner – “Long Live The Queen”

I was sipping on a Whiskey when I got the call
Yeah my friend Lex was lying in the hospital
She’d been pretty sick for about half a year
But it seems liked this time the end was drawing near
So dropped my plans and jumped the next London train
I found her laid up and in a lot of pain
Her eyes met mine and then I understood
That her weather forecast wasn’t looking too good
So I sat and spun her stories for a little while
Tried to raise her mood and tried to raise a smile
But she silenced all my rambling with a shake of her head
Drew me close and listen this is what she said now

“You’ll live to dance another day, it’s just now you’ll have to dance, for the two of us, so stop looking so damn depressed and sing with all your heart that the Queen is dead”

Yeah she told me she was sick of all the hospital food
And of doctors, distant relatives, draining her blood
She said “I know I’m dying, but I’m not finished just yet, I am dying for a drink and for a cigarette”
So we hatched a plan to book ourselves a cheap hotel
In the centre of the City and to raise some Hell
They waste to all the clubs and then when everyone else is long asleep
We know we’re good and done

“You’ll live to dance another day, it’s just now you’ll have to dance, for the two of us, so stop looking so damn depressed and sing with all your heart that the Queen is dead”
And South London’s not the same anymore
The Queen is dead, and the last of the great has finally gone to bed

Well I was working on some words when Sarah called me up
She said that Lex had gone asleep and wasn’t waking up
And even though I knew that there was nothing to be done
I felt bad for not being there and now, well, she was gone
So I tried to think what Lex would want me to do
At times like this when I was feeling blue
So I gathered up some friends to spread the sad sad news
And we headed to the City for a drink or two
And we sang

“We live to dance another day, it’s just now we have to dance for one more of us, so stop looking so damn depressed, and sing with all our hearts, long live the Queen”

  1. Don’t get time to listen to music anymore, but was fascinated by your tweet:

“It’s the spiders, they want me to tap dance! Seriously, though, there are about a hundred of them on the way to feed my neighbour’s rabbit.”

Is there no end to your talents? Never met anyone who could train even one spider to feed the neighbour’s rabbit, let alone a hundred!

Spider training here is more akin to lion taming – best done with a chair and a whip. The outdoor ones are multi-coloured and shiny. By October they will be the size of your hand and have webs that cross entire streets.

The indoor ones are flat circles of hair with legs and rather like Dr Who’s stone angels. You never see them move, but look away for one second and they’ll reappear on a different wall, worrying close.

    1. Your comment made me laugh so hard!
The spiders want me to tap dance – that’s a quote from a Harry Potter film. I think the second one. It’s not in the books but it’s hilarious anyway, it’s Ron having a bad dream. “You tell those spiders, Ron…”
And I meant, as you know I did, that they were all over the path and hanging over my head, requiring me to do the limbo the whole way to the rabbit hutch. I really, really, don’t like spiders. There was a huge one in my house the other day and, um, I screamed. Quite loudly. I’m not scared of them, but they’re just gross and horrible.
I am very glad I live in England as those spiders sound horrible.
      Ugh! Ninja spiders!
Also this song is amazing, so if you get three minutes to spare please listen :D

      1. I read both your comments, and I snorted so hard my Mum thought I’d coughed something up…

And yes, that is the place – it’s after they’ve come back from the Forest and Ron’s still jittery after the whole “nearly getting eaten and escaping in a live car” thing.

        1. Ha ha, my parents are forever coming in when I’m laughing because they think I’m crying or screaming or something. Especially the NaNoisms forum, when I usually AM crying…

What do you think? I'd love to hear your thoughts.
