I’m usually pretty motivated to write. I have slow days, and days where my hands hurt, and days where writing feels like pulling teeth, but I think all of those are normal. I have other days where it practically files across the page and I end up with thousands more words than I started with. And then I have the days where I’ll do pretty much anything to avoid writing — read an entire book, even though I lost interest in it after two chapters; cook and eat far too many pancakes until I can hardly move; ignore my list of responsibilities because phone calls are scary; and redesign my blog.
Sometimes I think I’ve been blogging for long enough (coming up to seven years, which is vaguely terrifying) that I should just bite the bullet and pay for a properly-designed website instead of half-heartedly editing my theme periodically, when I can figure out enough about code to fix whatever aspect of it I so disliked. And then I remember that I’m literally never satsified with how my blog looks, and every few months I feel the need to change it entirely, from fonts to colour scheme and layout, and I decide that maybe I won’t part with any money just yet.
This time, I decided to go back to the black-and-aqua colour scheme I had a short while ago (or I guess it’s maybe turquoise? It’s bluer, though, which I would have thought made it aqua). I abandoned that colour scheme in favour of green, although I previously kept the same layout, but I do really like it. There’s a reason I had my hair that colour for a while. So I decided to go back to that, and it struck me as I went through theme after theme and tried to find something that I liked even moderately that what I needed was a background image. If I don’t want it to look like every other blog ever, then that’s one variable I can change to make it different.
Of course, then I had to try and find something that was both legal and free, because I’m a law-abiding cheapskate. I found this great site that has loads of backgrounds and other things, too, which I’m going to look into in the future: Backgrounds Etc from Mysitemyway. I thought it was going to be like all the others and demand that I sign up before it let me use anything, or only give me low-quality images unless I pay, but nope, it was just a matter of downloading the .zip files.
And after a couple of false starts, I found a background that suited my colour scheme, didn’t overwhelm the page, and generally suited my purposes.
I like the cosmic effect it has on the blog. I like the slight overworldliness of the blue that could be the sea or the sky. I like the stars that you mostly see at the bottom of the page, until you scroll down and realise that they’re at the top under the header too. I don’t know how it’ll look on smaller computer screens yet — mine’s huge, so I usually get a larger amount of background than the average visitor — and I’m not entirely convinced by using the bright aqua as the accent colour on the blog, as it’s a bit pale against the white menu background at the top. Nor do I particularly like the dark grey the theme uses for links, but I haven’t figured out how to change it yet.
But it’ll do for now. Until I next get impatient and decide I hate everything about my theme and tell myself for the fifteenth time that I really must learn code so that I can make one for myself because I’ll never like everything about one.
So if you’re reading this in the WordPress Reader or via email subscription or in some other strange and arcane manner that means you can’t see the new theme, I’d like to invite you to click through and check it out. Any thoughts? Is it readable? Are you fed up of me asking your opinion every time I change it? (Probably.) Tough, because I doubt I’m going to stop any time soon.
Now if you’ll excuse me, I’ve got some writing to avoid doing…
